How does SEO differ between Google and Yandex?
The basics are shared: accessibility, useful content, usability. The differences are in the details: Yandex weighs user behaviour, regional relevance and commercial factors — prices, contacts, company details, range — more heavily. Google leans more on links, E-E-A-T and Core Web Vitals. Yandex has its own tools: Clean-param, region assignment, Neuro. Each engine needs its own diagnostics.
What is Google Search Console?
A free Google service for site owners. It shows which queries the site appears for, impressions and clicks, which pages are indexed and why others are excluded, and problems with the mobile version, Core Web Vitals and markup. It is also where you submit sitemaps and request re-indexing. Data covers the last 16 months.
What is Yandex Webmaster for?
It is Yandex's counterpart to Search Console: query and impression statistics, pages in search and excluded pages, crawl errors, robots.txt and sitemap checks, security and violation diagnostics. It is also where you set the site's region, send pages for re-crawling and see how Yandex reads the server response. For Russia and other Yandex markets it is essential.
How do you check a page in Google?
Paste the address into URL Inspection in Search Console: it shows whether the page is indexed, which canonical Google chose, when it was last crawled and what the rendered HTML looks like. "Test live URL" checks the current version, "Request indexing" queues it. The site: operator in search only gives a rough picture.
How do you check a page in Yandex?
Yandex Webmaster has "Server response check" — the code and content the robot receives — and "Check URL status" — whether the page is in search and why it was excluded. "Page recrawl" lets you submit a few dozen URLs a day. For bulk checks, use "Pages in search" filtered by excluded pages.
Do you need to register a site with search engines?
No special registration is needed: search engines find sites through links. But verifying ownership in Search Console, Yandex Webmaster and Bing Webmaster Tools right away is worth it — you get query and error data, can submit a sitemap and receive alerts. It is free and does not affect rankings directly. Paid "submission to 1,000 directories" is unnecessary.
Why can't people find the site by its name?
Common reasons: the site is new and not yet indexed, pages are blocked with noindex or robots.txt, the name matches a common word or another company, or the brand has no mentions on other sites. Check that the homepage is indexed in Search Console and Yandex Webmaster, make sure the name is in the title, H1 and Organization markup, and create profiles in maps and directories.
What is a snippet?
A snippet is a result block on the search page: title, URL and description, sometimes with a rating, price or FAQ. The title usually comes from the title tag and the description from meta description or page text, but Google and Yandex often rewrite them to match the query. A good snippet raises CTR at the same position: the title states the page's substance and brand, the description a concrete benefit.
Do you need meta keywords?
No. Google officially stopped using meta keywords for ranking in 2009. Yandex's documentation allows that they may be considered, but in practice their effect is negligible. Filling them in is close to pointless, and a keyword list in open source code hands competitors your keyword strategy. The title, H1, page text and internal links matter far more.
Does the mobile version affect search?
Yes. Google indexes sites by their mobile version (mobile-first indexing): if text or links are hidden on mobile, Google does not see them. Yandex considers mobile usability in mobile results. Make sure the mobile version has the same content and markup as desktop and is easy to use: readable fonts, tappable buttons, no horizontal scrolling.
